The process of sandblasting and powder coating

The process of sandblasting and powder coating are crucial steps to a professional finished product for metal surfaces. If done correctly, the process shields your assets against outside elements as well as providing a seamless finish. There are many benefits to the process, and steps to ensure the best effect possible.

What is sandblasting?

Sandblasting is the pre-treatment process for steel. It cleans and prepares the surface for the later powder coating. Using abrasive sand and compressed air, the metal is cleaned and returned to its original surface. This is essential before attempting to apply any powder coating or traditional paint, as removing any dirt, oil, or grime will provide a long-lasting and even paint finish. Sand blasting can be completed as a pre-treatment, or a stand-alone service to restore metal to its former glory.

What is powder coating?

Powder coating is a reliable alternative to a standard paint finish, providing a longer lasting and more durable finish. The polyester or eproxy coating forms a flexible coating once heated in a curing oven. This reduces the chance of chipping or cracking in the paint surface in the future. Another benefit of powder coating is its durability to weather and wear-and-tear, making it a great option for outdoor metal that is exposed to the elements.

Our process

Complete inhouse services is something that The Fabrication Company prides itself on. Not only do we offer our end-to-end metal fabrication, but we also offer professional sandblasting and powder coating. These services are operated by our sister company, The Powder Coating Company. Dip Tanks

For aluminium pre-treatment, we offer a thorough four-stage process that removes foreign particles that could potentially cause corrosion/flaking later down the track. Pre-treatment depends on the metal, and only aluminium is treated in our dip tanks. All other metals require sandblasting to pre-treat. The Powder Company Co offers both, allowing us to work with all kinds of metals.

Our aluminium pre-treatment process involves our 7m x 1.2m x 2 m dip tanks, and we use Oxsilan technology which is non-carcinogenic and environmentally friendly. Many competitors use chromate as their pre-treatment for aluminium which is carcinogenic and not so friendly on the environment.
